Halloween Party: Day Three

Hello crafting friends. Today is our Whimsical Wednesday Challenge and day three of Halloween of my Halloween celebration. Today the Whimsical Wizards have created a Halloween themed LO, and have included some kind of technique and a tutorial. Your challenge is to create a Halloween themed LO and pick one of the wizards techniques to include on your page. You must include who's technique you used in your post, and a link to their. Here is my LO for this week:
This was suppose to be a two page 12X12 LO but I ran out of ink, so made a one pager. I have a really hard time creating a LO when I don't have the pictures in front of me. My sweet friend Cindy designed those pumpkins specially for me. I told her exactly what I wanted and the next day I had them. So super cute right. Thank you Cindy:) She calls them Silly Friends Pumpkin Patch. She created them so you can have them grouped together or individually like I have on this LO. Those stamps are from Trade Fish Designs, and are called Rest In Peace. They were the perfect finishing touch to the page. I used Shabby Crinkle Ribbon, from the Prairie Bird Boutique, to tie bows on the picture mats. Now for my tutorial. I get a lot of question about coloring so I thought I would do a quick and super simple coloring technique using colored pencils (any coloring pencils will do) and ordorless mineral spirits (you can use baby oil if you don't have mineral spirits). First you start by outlining your image.
I don't outline my entire image at once I do a little portion like above. Then I take my mineral spirits and put some on my blending stumps, the ones I use are called Blending Tortillons. You can find them at your local craft store:
Then you will take your blending stump and work from the outside of the image (where you outlined) towards the inside of the image from where you have outlined. This pulls the color causing it to get lighter and lighter.   If you are pleased with the outcome you can continue outlining the rest of your image and repeat the above step. Here is a close up of the pumpkin:
You can see the darker and lighter areas. I tend to go over areas more than once, and will add more color in areas where I want the image to be darker. This technique is a very easy way to get shading on your images, specially if you are just starting to color. I hope you will give it a try. If you have any questions just leave me a comment. Here is a close up of the pumpkin cuties:
Once I was done coloring them I added some chalk to the cheeks and crackle accents to the leaves.

This week's sponsor is Patsy from the Prairie Bird Boutique. One random winner will get to chose one of her Shabby Crinkle Ribbon Bundles. Be sure to hop on over to Whimsical Wednesday to see what the talented team has for you this week.

For today my blog candy for the Halloween Party is this cricut cartridge:

All you need to do is:leave me a comment and become a follower of my blog if you are not already. You will have until this Sunday night at midnight to leave a comment under all the post from this week. All winners will be announced on Wednesday, October 12. For those of you who stop by everyday and leave a comment under each post for the week you will be entered into a random drawing and receive a Scrap' n Tote:

This Friday night at 7pm EST is our Halloween Whimsical Wednesday blog hop. The Whimsical designers have crafted up some wicked fun inspiration for you. We have a nice lineup of sponsors, and I am sure there will be some blog candy along the way.

Thank you for stopping by today. I hope you enjoyed my little project, and tutorial.

Great tutorial Stephanie! The only thing I have for coloring is colored pencils. You have no idea what a help this is to me! I had heard that people used mineral spirits but not HOW they used them :) LOVE this layout. I almost wish I still needed to do my kids Halloween layouts from when they were little - I have learned so much since then - they are rather dull I am afraid. Thanks for sharing this fabulous technique!

what a cute page!!! thank you for the coloring tutorial - I really struggle with it! I see everyone using copic markers and as nice as they look they are just way out of my budget so it's great to see someone showing other options!! TFS and have a wonderful day!!!

This is awesome Stephanie! Thanks for sharing how you colour so nicely with coloured pencils. I may have to put the Copics aside (they are frustrating me lately - aaack!) and give your technique a try. :)

Such a cute page, Stephanie! Your daughter is the sweetest little thing and WooHoo for Cindy being able to draw exactly what you had in mind. Fabulous! Thanks for the tips, I haven't pulled out my pencils in AGES! I have a few of those tortions but have never used them. Obviously they work better than the Q-Tips I used to use. xxD

Wow, Steph, Thank You so much for this tip. I have two art sets full of pencils, chalks and paints. I think this might just force me to follow your technique for the WW challenge. One question though, what would one use instead of a blending stump???
:O)

Stephanie, that tutorial is terrific and so is the LO!!!! I have the pencils but have not bought the mineral spirits. The chemical cautions always scared me away. But when I see beautiful projects like this it makes me want to buy some. Sorry it took me so long to comment. I just got back and will try to catch up on your other posts tomorrow! Hugs- Glora

That pumpkin image is adorable and I have GOT to try the color pencil technique. I have some Prisma color pencils and am still trying to learn how to use them. Even bought some mineral spirits, so it's just a matter of jumping in, right?
